The San Siro (otherwise known as the Meazza is named after Giuseppe
Meazza who was a very famous soccer player who played for both AC
Milan and Inter Milan. The fact that AC Milan and Inter Milan are
two of the greatest football teams of present day only adds to the
heated atmosphere at the derbys.
The stadium was first constructed in 1926 and since that date has
continually been added on to and renovated to such an extent that
today the San Siro is one of the finest soccer stadiums in the world
with an all seated capacity of 85,000 people. During Italia 90 FIFA
World Cup the San Siro was home to group games, second round games,
quarter final games and semi final games.
The design of the San Siro is unique with two massive tiers. In
each corner are massive posts upon which a mettle scaffolding type
structure is built which gives relief from the Sun. The relief from
this structure is so much that the ground staff have a tough time
growing grass in this well shaded arena.
If you are planning to visit Milan during the soccer season it
would be well worth your while trying to get in a Seria A game,
particularly if AC Milan and Inter Milan are playing in a derby.
